The same Larry Bird debut ticket sold for $79,200 and then $19,520

Eight Larry Bird debut slabs have ever been offered at public auction and three of them have been offered twice, which is the highest repeat rate of any debut ticket we track. The three round trips agree on the same thing. The two bought in May 2022 lost 54% and 75%. The one bought in December 2020, sixteen months before that, came back five years later and made $125 more than it cost. The spike in between left no higher floor behind it. Every figure here comes from the 11 public sales of the 12 October 1979 game in the sold data we compile from Heritage, Goldin and Fanatics Collect, December 2020 to December 2025. Ten of the 11 carry a grade we checked against PSA's own record for that cert. Population figures were read live from PSA on 11 August 2026.

Two firsts on one ticket

Read the second line of the label. PSA catalogues this stub as C. FORD 1ST 3PT IN NBA HISTORY, because the game it admitted you to was two firsts at once. Boston Garden, Friday 12 October 1979, Celtics 114 Rockets 106. Larry Bird's first NBA game, 14 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in 28 minutes on his way to Rookie of the Year and a 61-21 season. And with 3:48 left in the first quarter, Chris Ford hit the first three-point field goal in NBA history, the season the league adopted the line. This is a $8.00 stadium seat, section 24, row E, seat 1, graded PSA FR 1.5. It is the only stub of the game at that grade, and it has never been offered in any sale we track.

No other NBA debut ticket carries a second first on the same piece of card, and PSA prints this one on the label. It has not shown up in the prices. The debut's record is $79,200, against $468,000 for the Michael Jordan NBA debut full ticket and $40,800 for LeBron James, and the 11 Bird sales together come to $199,262, less than half what the single Jordan full ticket made in one lot.

Every full ticket has beaten every stub

The two bands do not touch. Full tickets have sold five times, from $9,600 to $79,200, median $25,620. Stubs have sold six times, from $3,720 to $8,100, median $6,251. The cheapest full ticket ever sold still beat the dearest stub by 18.5%, and the gap holds across every grade and every year in the record. Grade barely registers inside the full-ticket band. This is an $11.00 loge seat, section 15, row 5, seat 11, punched twice by the gate and graded PSA Authentic, the tier PSA uses when it will not assign a number. It sold at Heritage in August 2025 for $25,620. Twelve weeks earlier the PSA FR 1.5 full ticket, two tiers up the label, made $19,520. The lower-graded ticket made 31% more, and the only material difference between the two sales was the room they were sold in.

It runs the other way too. The PSA PR 1 (MK) full ticket, the lowest numeric grade PSA issues and carrying a marks qualifier, made $28,800 at Heritage in February 2023, more than any full ticket has managed since. Rank the five full-ticket sales by grade and the order is 1.5, 1, Authentic, 1.5, Authentic; rank them by price and it is the same list shuffled. What moves this ticket is the date of the sale, not the number on the flip.

Nothing from this game grades above VG 3

PSA files the debut as three separate items across two headings: the stub (10 copies), the full ticket (5), and a punched full ticket it catalogues on its own (1). Sixteen unsigned copies in total, and the top grade in existence is VG 3. There is no PSA 4 anywhere, no PSA 5, nothing higher. The five standard full tickets are the neatest population we have come across: one Authentic, one PR 1 (MK), one FR 1.5, one GD 2 and one VG 3, a single copy at every grade it exists in. The PSA 2 and the PSA 3, the two best full tickets ever graded, have never been offered at auction, so the top of this market has no price attached to it. The record was set by the FR 1.5, two rungs below the best.

Signed copies are counted separately, under PSA/DNA. There are nine of those as of 11 August 2026, eight stubs and one full ticket, and they top out at PSA 2 as well. One has sold: a signed stub with an Auto 10 grade that made $5,002 at Heritage in December 2025, less than the unsigned VG 3 stub made in the same auction. Our scans database holds 12 examples of the debut, nine of the 16 unsigned copies and two of the nine signed ones, each with its cert number, grade and PSA slab image. The groups themselves sit in our population database.

The cheapest seat in the building on the night, and the sharpest fall in the record. $3.00, balcony section 66, stamped OBSTRUCTED VIEW in red at the printer, graded PSA PR 1 with a marks qualifier. It made $8,100 at Heritage in May 2022 and $3,720 at Heritage in November 2023, down 54% in eighteen months with nothing about the slab altered. Whoever bought it at the top held it for a year and a half and gave back more than half.

One graded ticket from each of ten other rookie games

The same PSA heading that holds the debut stub holds ten more games from Bird's rookie season, catalogued individually because of what he did in them. Every one has a population of exactly one, and not one has ever sold publicly in the data we track. That includes his first career triple-double and his 41-point rookie high, both rarer than the debut by a factor of ten.

Away from 12 October, Bird tickets are cheap. Across the 103 graded Larry Bird ticket sales we track, September 2014 to June 2026, the median is $518.50 and 62 of them, 60%, sold under $1,000. The 11 debut sales are $199,262 of the $453,979 total, so 10.7% of the sales carry 43.9% of the money.

The Larry Bird debut ticket, sale by sale

The bidding tells the same story as the prices, and it rules out the obvious explanation. The record full ticket drew 37 bids when it made $79,200 at Goldin in May 2022. The identical slab drew 43 bids when it made $19,520 at the same house in June 2025. More people chased it the second time and it fetched a quarter as much, so the fall is not a thin room or a bad night. It is the level.

What the round trips say a Larry Bird debut ticket is worth

A full ticket is a $19,500 to $25,600 item. Both 2025 sales landed in that band, twelve weeks apart, and they were the lowest and the second-highest grades on offer. Widen it to the last four sales, February 2023 to August 2025, and the range is $9,600 to $28,800, with the $9,600 the only result under $19,000 in three years. Grade will not move you far inside that band; being a full ticket at all is what buys the position. The $79,200 record is not the market, it is a single May 2022 result that the same object has since failed to reach by 75%.

A stub is a $3,700 to $7,600 item, and the top of that range is fixed by one slab. The only VG 3 stub in existence made $7,500 in December 2020 and $7,625 in December 2025, a gain of $125 over five years, and it is the best stub anybody can buy. Below it the mid and low grades have traded from $3,720 to $8,100 with no trend either way since 2023. A signed stub sits inside the same band at $5,002. What is genuinely untested is the top: the PSA 2 and PSA 3 full tickets have never been offered, and neither has the PSA 1.5 stub that PSA labels as the first three-pointer in NBA history. Six of the 16 unsigned copies have never come to auction at all, and until they do the ceiling on this ticket is an estimate rather than a number.
