Diego Maradona debut ticket prices start in 1977 because nothing from his 1976 debut has ever been graded

Maradona debuted five times between 1976 and 1984. PSA has graded nine tickets from the Argentina debut, 121 from the World Cup debut, and not one from the game that started it.

The debut the hobby pays for is not the one the record books start with. Maradona's professional career began on 20 October 1976 for Argentinos Juniors, but the ticket collectors buy as his debut is from 27 February 1977, his first cap for Argentina, because that is the earliest game PSA has ever been sent a ticket from. Below is each debut in order, what the historical record says it was, how many graded tickets exist for it, and what they have sold for. Population figures are from the 8 July 2026 PSA census unless marked live; sales are every one we have compiled from Goldin, Heritage, Fanatics Collect, SCP and eBay through September 2026, matched by PSA cert rather than by auction title.

The professional debut has never been graded

Argentinos Juniors went to Córdoba on 20 October 1976 and lost 1-0 to Talleres. Coach Juan Carlos Montes sent on a 15-year-old in the number 16 shirt for Rubén Giacobetti in the second half, ten days short of his sixteenth birthday, and his first touch was a nutmeg (La República, ESPN). That is the professional debut. No ticket from it has ever been submitted to PSA: there is no catalogue entry for the game, so the population is not low, it is zero. The reasons are ordinary. It was an away fixture at a provincial ground, the boy was unknown outside the club, Argentine league tickets of the period were small paper stubs torn at the turnstile and thrown away, and the country was seven months into a military dictatorship with other things to keep. A stub could still be sitting in a drawer in Córdoba, and the day one is submitted PSA will open the entry. It is unlikely. It is not impossible.

The same is true of the next Argentine debut. Maradona joined Boca Juniors in February 1981 and played his first game on 22 February 1981 against the same Talleres, winning 4-1 with two penalties in front of a full Bombonera (El Gráfico, Diario de Cuyo). PSA has graded nothing from that game either. The nearest thing to a surviving ticket we know of is one located by the collector behind Tickets with Tay, the only copy anyone has reported, and it has not been through PSA. So of the two debuts Maradona made in Argentine league football, one has a single known raw copy and the other has none.

The 1977 Argentina debut carries the price

On 27 February 1977 Argentina beat Hungary 5-1 in a friendly at La Bombonera and Maradona, 16, came on for Leopoldo Luque in the 62nd minute (What a Howler, TUDN). It was a friendly, but it was a full senior cap, and it is the earliest Maradona game on PSA's report. The census of 8 July 2026 counted seven stubs: one Authentic, two PSA 1 plus one PSA 1 with a qualifier, two PSA 1.5 and a single PSA 2, which is the highest grade. Two more items share the date: one printer's proof full ticket (PSA 4) and one media pass (PSA 5), nine tickets in all. A live read of the PSA 2 on 6 October 2026 still returns a population of one at its grade with none higher, so nothing has been added since the census.

Three of the seven stubs have sold, all at Goldin. The PSA 2, cert 63874565, took 76 bids and hammered at $28,100, $33,720 with the premium, on 10 January 2022. A PSA 1, cert 65734407, made $4,350 on 20 bids seven months later. The most recent, another PSA 1, cert 100697966, made $2,257 on 20 bids on 30 March 2025. The record therefore stands at 7.8 times the next sale and 15 times the latest one, on one grade step. Read the three slabs side by side and the labels explain part of it: the two 2022 lots are the blue 2,500-peso platea ticket, and the 2025 lot is the lilac 1,500-peso variant from a cheaper sector.

Across the football debuts we track, only one ticket has sold higher: the PSA 7 full from Messi's 2003 Barcelona friendly at $49,200, and that was a preseason game rather than his official debut. Pelé's 1958 World Cup debut peaked at $32,940 for a PSA 7, just under the Maradona figure, from a far deeper population. The thinness cuts both ways. With seven stubs graded and three sold, one more consignment could reset the price in either direction, and the gap between the 2022 and 2025 PSA 1 results already shows how much the year matters.

The 1982 World Cup debut is where the volume is

Belgium beat the holders 1-0 at Camp Nou on 13 June 1982, the opening match of the tournament, Erwin Vandenbergh scoring in the 62nd minute (footballhistory.org, RTBF). Maradona played the full ninety for Argentina and was marked out of it. The crowd was the point: Barcelona had just paid a record fee for him, and the stadium was full of people who had come to see their new signing. Tickets survived in numbers. The census counts 69 full tickets (67 plain, one postmarked, one reattached), 49 stubs and 3 printer's proofs, 121 in all, which is 13 times the 1977 population. The full tickets run from a single PSA 1 up through thirteen PSA 8s to one PSA 9, cert 128248519, which a live read on 6 October 2026 confirms as a population of one with none higher.

We hold 46 sales of 32 different certs for the game, $26,066 in total, with a median of $429. Full tickets median $552 across 29 sales; stubs median $312 across 15. The top of the range is one cert sold twice in 2021: the PSA 5 full 53688978 made $1,200 at Goldin in May and $2,999.99 on eBay that November. Below it sit the $2,280 PSA 3 above, a PSA 6 at $1,110 (Fanatics Collect, June 2023), a PSA 1 at $906 and a PSA 7 proof at $780 (Goldin, March 2022). None of the thirteen PSA 8s or the PSA 9 has ever been offered. The eleven sales from January 2025 to July 2026 ran from $183 to $800, with three PSA 5 fulls at Goldin in 2026 closing at $500, $580 and $580. For this game, form does as much work as grade: the eight PSA 5 full tickets median $660, the three PSA 5 stubs $397.

The cert numbers add one detail. Six of the thirteen PSA 8 full tickets carry consecutive certs, 147483478 through 147483483, which is one submission, one owner, graded together. Two more PSA 8s sit at 128248518 and 128248520 either side of the PSA 9. The high end of this population is in very few hands, which is why it has never traded. The wider context for 1982 sits in every World Cup ticket result from Goldin's Global Football sale, where a PSA 5 full of this game closed at $579.50.

The club debuts in Europe exist on the report but have not traded

Maradona's official Barcelona debut was the La Liga opener at Valencia on 4 September 1982, lost 2-1 after he had scored in the 20th minute (FC Barcelona, Official Press). PSA has graded two tickets from it, a PSA 1.5 and a PSA 3, and neither has been offered in public. His official Napoli debut was the Coppa Italia group game against Arezzo at the San Paolo on 22 August 1984, won 4-1 with a Maradona goal in front of more than 70,000 (El Tiempo, 1984-85 season record); the Serie A debut followed at Verona on 16 September, a 3-1 defeat (Hellas Verona). PSA has three Arezzo stubs, two PSA 5 and one PSA 7, cert 151628655, and nothing from the Verona game. No sale of any of the five has reached us. For both clubs the tickets that have actually sold are from the friendlies that preceded the real debut, which is the next section.

What collectors buy instead, and what each one costs

Each alternative below carries its population from the 8 July 2026 census and the sale range we hold, built by cert. Two of the entries are preseason friendlies that auction houses have catalogued as debuts; they are not the debut, and the preseason gap applies to them.

The Hand of God game is the Maradona ticket with the deepest market, 70 graded and 18 sales, and its $11,400 full ticket is the only Maradona result that approaches the 1977 record. The 1986 final, the more important match, has 29 graded copies and has sold twice in public, both PSA 1 stubs, at $565 in 2021 and $465 in 2022. Put the whole list together and the shape is clear: Maradona's two Argentine debuts are not on the market at all, his two European club debuts are on the report but have never been offered, and the price lives on the 1977 cap and the 1982 World Cup opener. If a 1976 Argentinos Juniors stub ever surfaces, it arrives into a market that has already paid $33,720 for the game that came four months after it.
