Tickets at the 2026 National Sports Collectors Convention, and the market behind them

The 46th National Sports Collectors Convention ran from 29 July to 2 August 2026 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois. Prices here come from the 17,610 graded ticket sales we track across Heritage, Goldin and Fanatics Collect, worth $31,234,295 between September 2004 and 2 August 2026. Population counts come from the census of PSA's ticket population read on 8 July 2026, except where a figure is stamped as read live on 7 August. Tickets were not one corner of the floor

The consistent report from the ticket side of the 2026 National was breadth. Three dealers who sell tickets and nothing else anchored the category and stayed busy through the week, but the change was everywhere else: tickets in quantity on tables that primarily sell cards, spread far enough across the hall that searching the floor properly took a full day. Wednesday, the half day, drew the crowd a Friday used to draw, with a queue outside the building before the doors opened.

That is a claim about supply and about the number of people willing to stock it. The auction record is where it can be checked, and it agrees.

The year between the two Nationals

The money doubled. The number of tickets rose by a fifth. The third row is the one that matches what the dealers saw, because it counts how many different events found a buyer rather than how many slabs moved: 1,667 against 1,412. Growth is not a handful of famous debuts being traded harder. It is more distinct tickets, from more distinct games, reaching someone who wanted them.

The bottom of the market held up while the top ran away. 2,102 of the 3,446 tickets sold in the year, 61%, went for under $500, and that count rose too. A category where the cheap end keeps growing is a category taking on new collectors, which is the condition that fills tables at a convention.

One ticket the National added to the population

Willie Mays made his major league debut on 25 May 1951, an 8-5 Giants win over the Phillies at Shibe Park. When we read PSA's full ticket population on 8 July 2026, exactly one graded stub existed from that game, a single PSA Authentic. Read again on 7 August 2026, five days after the show closed, the count is two. The second was graded at the National.

The new one is cert 171593292, graded PSA 2. Its own PSA record reports nothing graded higher, which makes the newcomer the finest known example of the item and leaves the 2015 Authentic as the other half of the population. A $2.50 lower stand box seat, box 36, row 10, seat 1, printed by the Philadelphia National League Club with the rain check still attached.

This is the quiet mechanism behind the growth numbers. Tickets are not printed into the hobby, they are found and then graded, and a convention is where the finding happens at scale. Every stub that goes over the PSA counter on a Wednesday becomes a searchable item with a population, a grade and a comparable, which is the thing that lets it be priced and sold at all.

What happens once a ticket has a track record

Gretzky's NHL debut on 10 October 1979 is the clearest five-year price ladder in the hobby, and one changed hands around the 2026 National. PSA has graded 18 of the stub as of 8 July 2026: four Authentic, one PSA 8 and one PSA 9, nothing above. The grades below were read from each cert, not from the auction title.

A PSA 7 made $12,000 in 2021. A PSA 2 of the same stub made $21,350 in May 2026, and the single PSA 9 made $158,600 seven months earlier. The floor under the item moved more than the ceiling did in percentage terms, which is what happens when an item stops being a curiosity and starts having a market. Three of the six sales happened inside the year between the two Nationals.

The tickets that surfaced at the show

None of the following were auction lots. They were found in boxes, on tables, or brought to the show by their owners, which is the part of the hobby a sold-price archive cannot see. What the archive can do is say how rare each one is and what the last comparable did.

The Jordan sneaker debut is the sharpest example of how thin these populations are. PSA catalogues the 17 November 1984 stub in two varieties, 11 graded between them, and no straight grade above a PSA 3. The two examples above that both carry qualifiers, including the PSA 4 with a pen mark that sold at Heritage in April 2023 for $5,040. A poor-grade copy is not a compromise here. It is most of what exists.

Grading, and the queue

PSA ran its ticket submissions through its own ticket team at the show, separate from the main card queue, and the report from ticket submitters was good: questions answered on the floor, and at least one submission held back and returned to Texas rather than slabbed in a holder the graders were not happy with. The card side did not have the same week. The main on-site queue ran to hours on Wednesday and some service levels were closed after the first day. The ticket grading special that has run at past Nationals did not run in 2026.

For a category whose supply depends on how easily a found stub can be graded, that difference matters more than it sounds. Every ticket the show sent to PSA is a future entry in the population database and a future comparable.

The ticket meetup

The ticket meetup was held on Friday 31 July at Crust Brewing, about five minutes' walk from the convention centre. Headcounts given on the night ranged from 60 to about 75, and either way it was the best attended ticket meetup the group has run. Ticket Time Machine printed commemorative tickets for everyone who came. The same venue is booked in principle for 2027.

A ticket trade night is being planned alongside it for next year, moved to Thursday after a Saturday attempt in Cleveland ran into a crowd that had already been on its feet for four days. The open request from the floor was a shared list of what people are bringing to trade, published before the show rather than discovered on the day.

What to watch before Rosemont in 2027

The 47th National runs 28 July to 1 August 2027 at the same venue. Two things are worth tracking between now and then. First, whether the breadth number keeps climbing: 1,115 different events have already sold in the seven months to 2 August 2026, against 1,539 in all of 2025. Second, whether the top of the market keeps setting the tone, because the year's biggest results were still a small number of famous debuts, led by Jackie Robinson's 1947 debut stub at $366,000 and Jordan's 1984 debut stub at $341,600. The show floor is where the other 3,400 tickets come from.
